I am a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Medical Practitioner, and hold full and unrestricted vocational registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. I received Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa in 1990, qualifying me as a medical doctor. After a period of basic and advanced forensic psychiatric training, I was made a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) in 2009. In previous roles I have guest lectured at universities in Australia and New Zealand to law and medical students, qualified doctors and other specialists. I have also participated in medical school examinations as psychiatrist examiner. I am currently a psychiatrist in private forensic psychiatric practice, contracting inter alia to the Department of Corrective Services where I provide management and oversight of treatment of people with a wide range of mental illnesses. I also engage in private psychiatric practice as a Forensic Psychiatrist. I also periodically attend as the forensic psychiatrist at the START Mental Health Court in Perth. I am also a member of the WA Mental Health Tribunal, an independent quasi-judicial review body established under the Mental Health Act 2014. I participate in regular Board reviews of patients subject to compulsory treatment under the provisions of the Act. In my role as Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist I have provided comprehensive psychiatric reports and appeared as an independent expert witness in the District and High Courts of New Zealand. Since relocating to the South West of Western Australia in 2010 I have provided reports to various Boards, Tribunals and the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of Western Australia. I have received training in aspects of forensic psychiatry, report writing and the use of specialised risk assessment tools and psychological tests relevant to the field of forensic psychiatry and risk assessment. I maintain an interest and expertise in the assessment of psychopathy, violence risk and risk of sexual violence. I specialise in the psychiatric assessment of persons in the criminal justice system. To this extent, I visit Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie on a regular basis. I also maintain prison-based psychiatric clinics in prisons in these town. I do not see patients for general psychiatric management in the community. |
